Edwards, Katie (1st Grade)
Welcome to our first grade classroom! I am so happy to have your child in our class this year and know that, because we will work together, your child will have a successful and happy year in school. Collaboration between parents and teachers is essential to your child's education. I'll send monthly newsletters to you; please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or questions... my door is always open.

A look at my educational beliefs:
What professional training and educational background have you had?
I hold a BA in anthropology & a Masters in Teaching with a concentration in elementary education, both from East Carolina University. In college, I studied abroad in Finland, Italy and Greece and later completed a visitor interpretation internship with the National Park Service in Cades Cove, TN. I am currently working towards my environmental education certification.
What makes Fairview such a special place to teach?
We have a wonderful support system here at Fairview, from the administration to the staff. It feels like working with a family and we all share the same vision of teaching with compassion and rigor.
What do you like most about teaching at Fairview?
I love collaborating with my colleagues on best practices and curriculum ideas, not just in first grade but as a whole school. The staff, students, and families of Fairview are the best!
How would you describe your classroom?
A place in which students are welcome to be unique individuals and with their own and others' ideas, as well as share them and teach each other. Communication between myself, students, and families is also encouraged. I will be incorporating the outdoors as a learning environment this year.
What authors or books inspire you as a teacher?
"The First Days of School" by Wong and Wong, "Awakening Children's Minds" by Linda Berk, and "Oh, the Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss
What is your favorite quote about education, children and/or learning?
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela. "Education isn't preparation for life; education is life itself." - John Dewey.
How does Fairview create 21st century learners who collaborate with others and have a true passion for learning?
We create digital projects throughout the year and many of these are completed in groups. A lot of learning is done between and through the students collaborating and teaching each other as opposed to the lecture style of teaching.
In what ways can parents take an active role in your classroom and in their child's learning?
My door is always open and welcome to volunteers. Students get motivated when they see a parent in the classroom. It is also important that parents complete homework with their child to reinforce classroom concepts in the home.
Is there anything else you would like to share about your classroom?
This is a very nurturing place full of love and encouragement, infused with humor. I want you to feel at ease and happy about having your child in this classroom.
