Mrs. Jennifer P. Gortney

My name is Jennifer Gortney. I have taught at Fairview Elementary since 1993. My husband Ron and I live in Fairview and have four children. All four of our children attended Fairivew! We are all very involved with the community. My hobbies are mostly centered around what ever my children are involved in. We play many different sports including softball, volleyball, baseball and basketball. You can find me on the sidelines or in the stands cheering my children on! I also love spending as much time as I can at my families lake house on Lake Lure.

I few other things you might find interesting are:
I love Coke Zero and ice from Sonic
Peanut butter is amazing (but I don't eat it at school )
Summer and sunshine make me smile
I dream of traveling to Greece on day

What makes Fairview such a special place to teach?

As the old saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child” . This could be the motto for Fairview. The staff works well together to meet each child’s specific needs to help them develop and grow to the best of their individual ability.

What do you like most about teaching at Fairview?

Since I live and teach in the Fairview Community, I love being able to know the students and their families on a more personal level. It is  very rewarding to watch the students as they progress from elementary to high school students, see their personalities take shape and their many personal accomplishments. I am always thrilled when a former student walks up to me and says “Mrs. Gortney do you remember me? I’m a senior in high school now. I remember the time when …..”

How would you describe your classroom?

I like to think of my classroom as it’s own little community where everyone is valued, has an important role and qualities to contribute. There are high expectations of everyone.

What authors or books inspire you as a teacher?

Children’s Literature is a very powerful reading experience. I am very found of Dr. Seuss and his ability to captivate his audience with such “nonsense” yet teach us so many life lessons. Patricia Polacco is another amazing author who uses her own personal experiences to captivate her audience of readers. Even as an adult I can learn so much from these authors.

For which classroom projects/events are you known?

Education is constantly changing and so are many of the projects that our classroom participates in. There are a few that seem to make it back into our classroom each year. One such project would be our Gingerbread Villages. Another fun event in 2nd grade would be our field trip to Chimney Rock. We attend a fabulous program led by the park rangers and staff down in “the Meadows” at Chimney Rock. I always look forward to a science unit where we get to experience the life cycle of mealworms up close and personal!

In what ways can parents take an active role in your classroom and in their child's learning?

It is important for children to see their parents take an interest in their school. Whether it is volunteering on a weekly bases, attending PTA sponsored events or meeting for parent conferences , children need to see that their parents value and know learning is important. Supporting them with their homework , truly listen as they share and talk about their day and asking questions shows them you are interested.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your classroom?

It is important to educate the whole child: socially, emotionally and academically.
