Welcome to Ms. Kuehne's 5th Grade at
Fairview Elementary School!

I am excited to be starting my eighth year at FES! Many years ago I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metalsmithing from Washington University in St. Louis. I dabbled in education for fifteen years before finally going back to school at UNCA to receive my teacher certification. During those fifteen years I worked as a graphic designer, a full-time mom, a teacher assistant, and a realtor.

I'm looking forward to a fantastic year!

What professional training and educational background have you had? I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis and my teacher certification from UNC Asheville.

What makes Fairview such a special place to teach?Fairview is exceptionally special because of the people who work there – all the people. We are a community that works together to meet the needs of all of our students.

What do you like most about teaching at Fairview? I like the camaraderie, professionalism, and supportive environment. I like the families and the community of Fairview and how they work with FES to create such a great learning environment.

How would you describe your classroom? My classroom is a hive of activity where students have many great opportunities that allow them to grow as learners and children.

What authors or books inspire you as a teacher? My favorite book is Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë. I first read this book when I was 13 years old. It resonates as strongly with me today as it did then because it speaks to the conscience and encourages constant reflection and assessment of every aspect of social justice. Its message is as relevant today as when it was published in 1847.

What is your favorite quote about education, children and/or learning? “Education is what survives when what has been learned has been forgotten.” B. F. Skinner

For which classroom projects/events are you known?I’m known on a smaller scale (in my classroom) as being a teacher who is not afraid to make a fool of herself in front of her students. Anything for the sake of learning!

How does Fairview create 21st century learners who collaborate with others and have a true passion for learning? I believe that we create 21st century learners by first going back to a strategy from the beginning of time – we help students learn to communicate effectively and conscientiously with each other. Fairview facilitates that process with their progressive approach to positive behavior, support, and a true sense of community.

In what ways can parents take an active role in your classroom and in their child's learning? Parents can best support their child’s learning by having open lines of communication with their child and their child’s teacher. A team comprised of the student, parents, and teacher is unbeatable!

Is there anything else you would like to share about your classroom? I have very high expectations in my classroom. Students rise to those expectations and it is a privilege to be a part of their lives. I love my kids.
