Guidance Topics

Guidance Classes are taught to each class every other week by Ms. Katie. The class is called Friends & Feelings.

Ms. Katie utilizes the Second Step program from Committee for Children. You can see more info about this program at http://www.secondstep.org. She also uses the Mindful Schools curriculum.

In Friends & Feelings, Ms. Katie teaches skills in the following five areas:

1. Skills for Learning: Students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how
to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on task, and be
assertive when asking for help with schoolwork.

2. Empathy: Students learn to identify and understand their own and others’
feelings by looking at facial expressions and body posture. Students also learn how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion.

3. Emotion Management: Students learn specific skills for calming down when
experiencing strong feelings, such as anxiety or anger. The steps are "Stop, Name your feeling, Calm Down" with deep belly breaths, counting, and positive self-talk.

4. Problem Solving: Students learn a process for solving problems with others in
a positive way with these steps: state the problem without blame, think of solutions that are safe and respectful, explore consequences, and pick the best solution.

5. Bully prevention: Students learn to recognize, report, and refuse bullying.
