School Counselor Responsibilities

Individual Student Planning

  • Counsel students with normal developmental issues
  • Consult with parents & teachers about their students
  • Facilitate/mediate/support parent-teacher conferences including Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs)
  • Create & support behavior intervention plans
  • Refer with mental health issues to community agencies & liaison with agency personnel

Targeted Small Groups

  • Facilitate Child Help and Parent Support Team (CHAPS) regarding high needs cases
  • Coordinate MANNA backpack program & Welcome Table fresh fruit for food-insecure students
  • Act as liaison between “Angels of Fairview” charity and students/families in need including Thanksgiving and Holiday meals and other ongoing needs
  • Assist 5th graders in their transition to middle school with special presentations & tours
  • International Club
  • Counsel groups of students with similar issues such as changing families, ADHD support, new students


  •  Facilitate Parents/Teacher Intervention meetings, perform student observations (TIPS)
  • Teach Classroom Guidance, K-5, and lesson planning
  • Coordinate Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) 
  • Prevent bullying through use of student surveys, bully box, school-wide initiatives, and classroom guidance; meet with students who exhibit bullying behaviors, their teachers, and their parents
  • Coordinate with Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) for K-5 safety and abuse prevention lessons
  • Coordinate Ambassador Program
  • School Improvement Team (SIT) member
  • Act on school Crisis Team 
  • Attend Specialist Meetings -“Connect Team,” to manage behavioral issues and coordinate lessons

Professional Development

  •  Attend county school counselor meetings
  • Attend professional development conferences
  • Present annually at conferences
