School Counselor Responsibilities

Individual Student Planning

  • Counsel students with normal developmental issues
  • Consult with parents & teachers about their students
  • Facilitate/mediate/support parent-teacher conferences including Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs)
  • Create & support behavior intervention plans (BIPs)
  • Refer with mental health issues to community agencies & liaison with agency personnel

Targeted Small Groups

  • Facilitate Child Help and Parent Support Team (CHAPS) regarding high needs cases
  • Assist 5th graders in their transition to middle school with special presentations & tours
  • Counsel groups of students with anxiety support, friendship skills, organizational skills

School-wide

  • Teach Guidance curriculum in Friends & Feelings class, K-5
  • Coordinate Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) 
  • Prevent bullying through student and staff education, school-wide initiatives
  • Coordinate with Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) for K-5 safety and abuse prevention lessons
  • Coordinate Ambassador Program
  • School Improvement Team (SIT) member
  • Act on school Crisis Team
