I love the Fairview/Asheville community. I graduated from UNCA, having studied sociology and K-6 education. I have been happily teaching here, at Fairview Elementary, since 1994.

Fairview is such a special place to teach for so many reasons. The first is that I attended Fairview Elementary as a child. As a matter of fact, so did my mom. It has always been such a comfortable, vibrant, and welcoming place. So MANY fantastic childhood memories for me and for my own two children who attended FES as well. Another reason our school is special is because of the fantastic support from parents.

I have to say that what I like most about teaching at Fairview is being a part of the learning and the laughter of children. I love to hear them laugh and watch them learn. Every single day is a new adventure for all of us.

My classroom is a warm inviting place in which children are encouraged to think for themselves, to trust themselves, and at the same time they learn to listen to others and engage in thoughtful discourse with other learners. I take great pleasure in watching them become more confident learners.

The educator/author who inspires me the most in education, is Ron Clarke. I appreciate his “Essential 55” and implement all his lessons on life in my classroom.

Favorite quotes of mine:

“Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them.”- Lady Bird Johnson

“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”- Fred Rogers

“Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way.”- George Evans

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”- Nelson Mandela

Fairview creates 21st century learners. We create learning environments that encourage our students to collaborate with others, listen to the ideas of others, and solve problems together. Our goal is to have students who care about each other, their environment, and who develop a true passion for learning.

It is important that parents take an active role in our classroom and in their child's learning. Parents are a child’s first teacher. The biggest advantages I think parents can offer their children is to show them they value education and to foster the importance of always doing one’s best. Parents can help by communicating with the teacher and showing their children they work as a team with the teacher. I love for parents to volunteer in the classroom, either by helping with math reviews, reading and writing with students, helping with parties and field trips, or by helping with special projects and crafts.
