Wood, Debbie (Title 1)

Debbie Wood
I am very excited to be part of the team here at Fairview! My husband, Marty, and I have lived in the mountains of North Carolina over 20 years. We love the mountains and enjoy spending time with our grandchildren. We work our little hobby farm in our spare time!
What professional training and educational background have you had?
  • I have a BS from Appalachian State in Elementary Ed., k-6
  • an MA in Reading Instruction, K-12
  • an MS in Library Science, K-12
  • Instructional Technology & Computer certificate
  • NBPT in Early & Childhood Literacy
What makes Fairview such a special place to teach?
Fairview is so special because of the team of teachers I get to work with. They are professional and passionate about what they do.

What do you like most about teaching at Fairview?
The best part about teaching at Fairview are the resources available to me as a teacher and reading specialist. I have access to guided reading book sets in a well stocked book room, reading intervention programs like Leveled Literacy Intervention and Just Words along with professional development opportunities to keep up with best practices.
What authors or books inspire you as a teacher?
Lately, I've been inspired Mike Mattos book, RTI at Work. I heard Mr. Mattos speak at the DuFour's PLCs at Work conference in Charlotte. He defines and describes best practices in the Response To Intervention. Our Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) use data to determine quickly which students that may need more support with reading. We are able to evaluate and put interventions in place efficiently.

What is your favorite quote about education, children and/or learning?
"The best teacher, failure is."  Yoda, The Last Jedi
I love working with elementary school aged children. It is so rewarding to see their growth. One year makes such a difference! It is absolutely a team effort, though, and I am thankful for all the support of our parents and staff here at Fairview!
