For the past 12 years, speech-language therapist Jennifer Knapp has been helping Buncombe County Schools students find their voices. Splitting her time between Woodfin Elementary, Clyde A. Erwin Middle, and Clyde A. Erwin High School, she sees firsthand how her students grow - from their very first day of kindergarten to walking the halls of high school.
This year at Woodfin Elementary, Ms. Knapp transformed her classroom into something truly unique - a cozy coffee house. Complete with warm decor and cafe-style touches, the space encourages natural conversation.
“When you’re in a coffee house, conversations flow freely,” Ms. Knapp explained. “That’s exactly what I wanted my students to experience - a comfortable place where they could build confidence and practice their communication skills without fear.”
And just like any other coffee shop, students have the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing glass of lemonade, along with a delicious treat. As a way to enhance the experience, one student gets to play the role of a server, in which they take the orders and serve the food. By creating a supportive environment, Ms. Knapp helps students not only improve their language skills but also grow in confidence and connect with others.
Students say they look forward to coming to Ms. Knapp’s coffee house.
“I like when we practice speech, play games, and we love to play with her,” said second grader Leo. “She is one of my favorite teachers, because she is very nice.”
For Ms. Knapp, the best part of her career other than working at the same elementary school her children attended, is watching her students thrive over time.
“I love being able to see my kids grow up from kindergarten to even high school,” she said. “It’s such a privilege to walk that journey with them and develop a special bond with each of them.”
Through creativity, care and dedication, Ms. Knapp continues to inspire her students to speak up and shine bright.
