Erwin Middle School's Battle of the Books team took first place in the district competition for the 2022 - 2023 school year. The team went on to represent Buncombe County Schools in the Regional competition and placed second.

The Battle of the Books program has been active since the 1940s. The purpose of the Battle of the Books is to encourage reading. Team members are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. Through the fun and challenge of district competition, students improve their reading skills.
