Second graders at Fairview Elementary got an egg-citing hands-on science lesson this past school year as they hatched chicks right in their classroom!

As part of their study of life cycles, students carefully observed fertilized eggs as they transformed over several weeks. With each day, the anticipation grew as students tracked development and charted what they saw. When hatching day finally arrived, the room filled with excitement as the tiny peeps of fluffy chicks marked the successful end of the cycle - and the beginning of a classroom full of new feathered friends.

This engaging project gave students a front-row seat to the stages of development inside an egg, reinforcing their understanding of biology in a memorable and meaningful way. It wasn’t just science - it was science they could see, hear, and hold.

“This experience truly brings learning to life for our students,” said second-grade teacher Jennifer Gortney. “They not only learned about the life cycle, but also about responsibility, curiosity, and compassion as they cared for the eggs and chicks.”

Fairview’s second-grade team says the chick hatch is always a highlight of the year and an unforgettable experience for students. From egg to chick, the project brought science to life - one peep at a time.
